Bedner’s Greenhouse is a family-owned business
run by Bob and Sue Bedner, their son Russ and his wife Melanie.
Bob and Sue began
growing flowers over 30 years ago to sell at the family’s farm market in Upper St. Clair. They started
out by growing just a few flowering plants in one small greenhouse, and today they grow one of the largest selections of annuals
in Western Pennsylvania. Due to the growth of their greenhouse operation, Bob and Sue left the family
farm market to open their own store in the spring of 1997. The original retail greenhouse that was built
on their Cecil farm was used from 1997—2005. The need arose for a more sophisticated retail
greenhouse, one that would be an enclosed space with temperature controls, a restroom, and more space for
benches and shopping carts. Over the winter of 2006, Russ and a family friend built the new store, which was completed just
in time to open in the spring.
There are fifteen production greenhouses on their farm, as well as fields
where produce is grown.. Plant production begins every January. In the summer and fall,
produce is picked daily, including: homegrown sweet corn, tomatoes, zucchini, eggplant, hot and sweet peppers, cabbage, broccoli,
cauliflower, cantaloupe, watermelon, pumpkins, gourds, and more.
