About the 2008 Theme, "Rooting for the Earth":
We use two definitions of "root" in this theme.  The first being the verb that means "to furnish with or enable to develop roots."  When we plant flowers and trees, we care for them so that they grow roots, or "the underground part of a seed plant body that functions as an organ of absorption, aeration, and food storage."  At the farm, we root plants in the greenhouses all winter long to prepare for spring.  You, as gardeners, root flowers and trees for exercise, relaxation, and beautification.  We are all rooting plants for the Earth.  As we learn about and begin to apply sustainable methods of maintaining plant health, we are practicing the increasingly important way of living known as "earth-friendly."

We also use the meaning of "root" as the verb "to noisily applaud or encourage a contestant or team."  We are "Rooting for the Earth" by planting flowers, vegetables, and trees, and showing that we care about our environment.  While those living in this mindset have often been referred to as "treehuggers", we now can see that environmental issues are on most people's minds.  To learn more about earth-friendly gardening practices, visit the following websites.
