Celebrating Success (and Getting Real)

I was determined to keep my begonia and petunia hanging baskets alive all summer. I often end up killing my baskets due to neglect. Can you relate?

The small containers need to be watered daily in the hot summer, and aren’t very forgiving of our schedules. I normally go through about three hanging baskets in a summer just for my little arbor. But this season I wanted to prove to myself that I could keep my May baskets alive, and I did it!

I just took these photos last Friday. The begonia had a rough patch, admittedly. Life had me distracted, and I didn’t water it one day (just one day!). I thought it was a goner. I gave it time and weekly feedings, and it’s really perking up. And the petunia, well it’s not in prime shape, but it’s still alive! I honestly should have trimmed it back about six inches or so around early July to keep it full and fresh. The blooms aren’t as plentiful right now, though I am admiring and appreciating each one I get before the season is over. In another two or three weeks, I’ll likely replace it with a fall mum hanging basket.

What gardening accomplishment are you really proud of this year, and/or what did you learn?

Let me know here and send some photos! I may share them in a future newsletter to inspire us all.

A few quick notes for this week:
  • We’re making some room for a fresh delivery next week, so all houseplants are 40% off, now though Sunday!

  • This Saturday is the last day for pick-your-own veggies! The cut flower field will be open for bouquet-making on Saturdays into September, 10am-2pm.

  • Did you notice the new event that we added called Sips & Sounds? We are music-lovers, and hosting guest musicians in the greenhouse is always a treat. We can’t wait to welcome Acoustic Daze on Sat/Oct5. They play a whole range of music with something for everyone and are so much fun. We hope you can join us!

  • Next weekend, on Sun/Sept 8, we also hope to see you at our Fall Open House, a celebration of the new season and a chance to show you how much we appreciate you.

  • As fall approaches, we are here to help you plan and plant with confidence. Fall is one of the best seasons to plant and move one step closer to your yard and garden goals. You can always count on us for fresh plants, Garden Coach appointments, InstaGarden Planting Kits and full landscape design services.

Congrats on your success and keep learning and planting!
