Houseplant of the Month: Aloe Vera
Aloe vera is a houseplant that is well known for it’s healing properties. The gel-like substance contained in the leaves is used for everything from skin conditioners to hair rinses. It’s been used medicinally for over 3,500 years, and is one of the most researched plants for natural health.
Aloe is also one of the best plants for purifying the air. It eliminates toxic VOC’s, (volatile organic compounds), such as benzene and formaldehyde, takes in carbon dioxide, and releases oxygen into the house.
Care and Maintenance
- A sunny south window is best
- Let the soil dry out between waterings
- Grows to about 1-2’ tall
- Repot only when it becomes very crowded using a cactus mix
- Fertilize twice per year, in spring and summer. Too much feeding can actually make the plant weaker.
