Meet a Community Market Day Vendor: Glencoe Gourmet
Business Name:
Glencoe Gourmet
Where do you live?
Green Tree, PA
How many years have you had your business?
I officially launched Glencoe Gourmet (I bake homemade nut, apricot, and poppyseed rolls) one year ago – in October 2020 – during COVID.
What made you want to start this business?
I started baking nut rolls over 41 years ago – as a homemade Christmas gift for friends. Over the years, I have shared them with family and numerous friends and co-workers. As I approached retirement I felt this would be a perfect time to transition my baking hobby into a home-based business.
What’s your favorite part about what you do?
I love working from home, the flexibility of setting my own schedule and meeting new (and repeat) customers at the various shows/events in Pittsburgh and surrounding areas. I enjoy listening to customers share stories about their family baking traditions and a favorite grandmother or aunt who made nut rolls. I recently participated in the Johnstown Slavic Festival and Nutroll Baking Contest.
Do you have any employees?
No employees – but I couldn’t do any of this without my husband, Ed. Both of our daughters are married and live outside of Pittsburgh but help remotely with social media and researching new venues/events.
What are your future goals for the business?
My dream business model has me living somewhere near a beach – baking/selling nut rolls in the morning and either reading a good book or walking on the beach in the afternoon. For now I am enjoying retirement and meeting new customers and welcoming repeat customers.
Interesting facts about you and/or your journey as a business owner?
I recently retired from the University of Pittsburgh (School of Medicine). My husband and I attended workshops through Pitt’s Small Business Development Center and along with mentoring from another small business owner I was able to complete the necessary paperwork and receive certification from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture for my home based baking. I am so grateful to everyone who has supported and encouraged me along the way.
Besides our Community Market Days, how else can the public buy from you?
Orders can be placed by email or phone call. I am also available in person at many events around Pittsburgh and surrounding area.
