Bedner's Farm & Greenhouse

Ask Erin, our Greenhouse Production Manager, Grower and Mom because she has her Master’s in Horticulture and loves plants so much, it’s almost impossible to pick her Top 3. When she’s not here, she loves spending time with her family and hiking anywhere in the Appalachians.

It’s nice to know the people behind the plants. Especially the ones who are generous about sharing their experience and expertise. This is one of many Bedner’s team members who loves plants and plant people and who makes the farm and garden center an even better place to be.

Meet Erin

Name: Erin Melbert

Role: Greenhouse Production Manager & Grower

Education: I have a Bachelor of Science in Biology, with a minor in Chemistry and a Master’s in Horticulture from Virginia Tech.

How long have you worked in horticulture and/or at Bedner’s? This is my 5th spring season at Bedner’s. My first job in the industry was a combination of public horticulture and greenhouse production, which was a summer job while I was in college. It was a great opportunity to gain diverse experiences and really cemented my love for horticulture.

Favorite thing about your job? As the Greenhouse Production Manager, I spend a lot of time doing research on horticulture trends and plant varieties, so I’m constantly learning. I also love that my job gives me the opportunity to walk through our facility and see the day to day change throughout the growing season.

Top 3 Plants? Only 3?!? This is such a hard question, and it changes depending on the time of the year and category of plants! However, three plants that consistently catch my eye are Baptisia, Physocarpus and Liatris.

Best piece of garden advice? Don’t forget to water your trees, shrubs and perennials! During dry spells, these plants can benefit greatly from supplemental irrigation, especially if they were only planted within the past year or so.

Interests and hobbies? Spending time with my family, hiking, watching movies, reading, listening to audiobooks and playing New York Times games.

Favorite vacation spot? Anywhere in the Appalachian Mountains.

Proudest accomplishment? Completing my thesis and graduate degree.

Favorite game, team or sport to watch or play? I enjoy watching hockey and football.

We hope you’ll say hello to erin next time you’re in the garden center!
