Bedner's Farm & Greenhouse

An accidental plant taxonomy class and this biology major grew into our multi-talented Landscape Designer (lucky us). This superwoman studied art in the south of France, is on the Pittsburgh Dahlia Society Court of Honor and is a big believer in planting en masse for maximum impact.

It’s nice to know the people behind the plants. Especially the ones who are generous about sharing their experience and expertise. This is one of many Bedner’s team members who loves plants and plant people and who makes the farm and garden center an even better place to be.

Name: Maddison Perzel

Role: Landscape Designer

Education: I graduated from Denison University with a degree in Biology. One accidental Plant Taxonomy class started me on the trajectory of an entire plant career.

How long have you worked in horticulture and/or at Bedner’s? I’m so glad to be back at Bedner’s! I’ve been working in horticulture for more than 10 years. Most of my professional experience is as Head Gardener for a naturalistic public garden, as well as Head Gardener with a contrasting position at a formal private garden. I’ve always loved teaching classes and sharing my passion for plants with people!

Favorite thing about your job? Being creative as I share my vision for your garden space.

Top 3 Plants? This changes regularly. Today, it’s Amsonia hubrichtii (Narrow- leaf Bluestar), Clethra alnifolia (Sweet pepperbush) and Sisyrinchium angustifolium (Blue-eyed grass).

Best piece of garden advice? Plant more than one of an individual perennial. Plant en masse—or at least three-of-a-kind in a drift—to create impact in the garden. Plus, bees are only going to travel for that pollen and nectar if it’s worth it!

Something interesting about you? I studied in the south of France while I was in college. It must have influenced my love for mixing creativity with science in gardening.

Interests and hobbies? Gardening, more gardening and some knitting in the winter. I do also enjoy trying new recipes in the kitchen and going out for hikes with my pups.

Favorite vacation spot? Somewhere new and different with my husband.

Proudest accomplishment? Winning a blue ribbon and getting on the Court of Honor at the Pittsburgh Dahlia Society for my dahlia arrangement.

Favorite game, team or sport to watch or play? I’m a huge Tour de France cycling nerd and love following along as they bike through France.

We hope you’ll say hello to maddison next time you’re in the garden center!
