Meet the Staff: Carrie Hansberry
Position: Sales Associate
Years working at the greenhouse: I have been working for four years at Bedners. I have done a little of everything. Planting during the winter, market at McDonald, sales floor , pumpkin launch for fall weekends and the food truck.
Did you go to school anywhere? Major? I went to Clarion University and graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree in Rehabilitative Sciences Geriatrics, minor in Accounting. I played volleyball for Clarion and our team was the first to win the state playoffs in 1988. We went to states all four years when I played as a Clarion Golden Eagle!
Grow up locally? If not, where? I grew up in Baldwin Township, PA (suburb outside of Pittsburgh). This community is very close to Mt. Lebanon and Castle Shannon. My husband and I lived in Mt. Lebanon for ten years and then moved to Chartiers Houston twelve years ago. We have two kids, Cate (14) and Griffin 11. We recently added a furry baby last summer, Lucy.
What made you want to work in a greenhouse? Is there an interesting story how you got to this job? I had worked outside the home as a Business Office Manager for ten years and then worked for a company as a collection agent for fortune 500 companies while working from home for seven years. After the birth of our son I became a stay at home mom. After a year at home I wanted to do more with gardening and decided to become a Master Gardener at the Penn State Extension Office for Washington County. Then a few years later saw the position for a Sales Associate at Bedners. A position at a greenhouse let me work and play at the same time? Wow! My hobby of gardening as a job! What an opportunity! I am also able to be close to home and my kids if needed.
What is the most enjoyable part of your job? I really like helping customers on the floor. Explaining plants and guiding them to make the right choice for them. I was given the task to take hold of the custom container orders this spring. It was sometimes a never ending job as the orders kept coming in, but the ability to be creative and see the customer’s happiness when they pick up their containers was priceless!
Do you have a favorite plant? Least favorite plant? I have many favorite plants! Particularly perennials…Cone Flowers, Bee Balm, Liatris, and Shasta Daisies to name a few. I also like trees and shrubs…Dawn Redwoods, Sourwood and Serviceberry. As well as Oakleaf Hydrangea, Quick Fire Hydrangea and Variegated Dogwoods.
Favorite part of working at Bedner’s? My favorite part of working for Bedners is working with some great people!
A gardening trick and tip I learned that has always stuck with was from a fellow Master Gardener that visited behind the scenes at Disney. She told me that the workers when doing the large hanging baskets place diapers in the containers under the soil. The diaper’s gel will expand and hold the water for the plant’s roots. I do this for all my containers at my home. The baby swim diapers are my favorite!
Something interesting about yourself? I coached volleyball for eight years and gave it up shortly after getting married. I needed something to do and found gardening as a great hobby and stress outlet. I really enjoy teaching my kids about gardening and the love of outdoors.
