Passing on our love of plants during Green Career Week and year round

FEBRUARY 27 – MARCH 3, 2023

We are and always will be plant people. It’s easy to appreciate a beautiful landscape or tasty apple. But the truth is, growing plants isn’t just pretty, it’s essential. Without them, we wouldn’t recognize our planet.

Seed Your Future is a movement in the green industry that promotes horticulture and how people can find lifelong careers working with plants.

THE ART AND SCIENCE OF GROWING

The word ‘horticulture’ can scare people away because it sounds so formal, and a little elusive. But it really just means the art and science of growing fruits, vegetables, flowers or ornamental plants like the trees, shrubs, annuals and perennials you use in your yards.

It’s the art and science of developing, sustainably producing and sharing the value plants bring to our environment and quality of life.

Plants are powerful and positive agents in a changing world.

Seed Your Future

GREEN CAREER WEEK

Each year Seed Your Future helps people like us share how vital, rewarding and fun green-collar jobs are, especially with the next generation.

Green Career Week focuses on how important plants and plant people really are. Because believe it or not, most schools stop teaching plant-based concepts in the third grade. And not one middle-schooler in industry focus groups had heard of the word ‘horticulture’ or could name more plants than company brands.

We are working to change that.

GROWING GREEN THUMBS

Melanie Bedner and Retail Manager, Maureen Campbell took their plant show on the road last week and visited a local school to talk horticulture. Something we try to do as often as we can.

And one of the best parts about talking with kids is how surprised they are to learn that not only are plants in their yards and at the park, but they bring us food, clean air, water and soil, the clothes we wear and so much more.

We love to share this video from Scholastic that really brings everything to life. And we hope you’ll share it with family and friends, too.

plants are our future

We envision a planet where everyone understands and values the importance of plants and the people who work with them.

That’s why we host group lectures, discussions and hands-on Make & Take Workshops.

We also host Behind the Scenes group tours where we talk about the types of plants we grow, walk the property, share the steps to our growing process and learn about how much horticulture has meant to our family and community.

And we love to share the promise that plants hold in our community and our world. There are even a number of horticulture-based scholarships, internships and volunteer opportunities students and adults can explore on Seed Your Future’s website.

The people of Bedner’s Farm & Greenhouse are here to inspire future plant people. We care about the vast benefits to our environment, health and quality of life, and would love to share it all with you.
