Spring Season Reflections at Our Family-Run Greenhouse
Gratitude, Growth, and the People Behind the Plants at Bedner’s
At Bedner’s Farm and Greenhouse in Cecil, PA, the heart of our work blooms behind the scenes. As a family-owned garden center serving the Pittsburgh area for over 28 years, we’re pausing to reflect on a spring season filled with growth, gratitude, and the people who make it all possible—our incredible team and loyal customers.
Whether you shopped with us, planned your landscape project, or just strolled through our greenhouses this spring, thank you for being part of the Bedner’s community.
The Roots of Bedner’s: A Greenhouse Dream That Took Courage
In 1997, my in-laws Bob and Sue Bedner took a leap of faith. They built a simple wooden-frame greenhouse, covered it in plastic, and filled it with plants they had grown since January—hoping people would drive down a dusty dirt road (it really was terrible back then!) to shop.
They worried, of course. Would anyone find their way out to rural Cecil to buy petunias? Would all the effort, fuel costs, and long days pay off?
Their leap created the roots of something much bigger—what would become a beloved garden center and gathering place for our community.
Behind the Blooms: What It Takes to Grow a Season
Even now, nearly three decades later, those same questions still cross my mind each winter:
Will people come? Will they choose us over the big box stores? Will they notice the thought and care behind every plant variety we select?
All winter long, we invest in planning, sourcing, and growing. We hand-pick unique annuals, perennials, shrubs, and trees that you won’t find just anywhere. We prepare our team, our greenhouses, and our services—all with the hope that when spring arrives, you’ll come visit and leave feeling inspired.
From Four to Sixty-Two: Celebrating Our Spring Team
Back in 1999, when I started helping during college breaks, our team was small—just Bob, Suzi, Russ, myself, and a few others.
This spring, we had 62 team members making it all happen, along with several talented professionals helping with marketing and finance. That’s over 60 people nurturing plants, assisting customers, designing landscapes, and keeping our greenhouse alive with energy and passion.
We celebrated with our annual summer team party—complete with a fishing derby and corn hole tournament. Huge thanks to Kata Short for capturing this beautiful team photo (even though 21 teammates couldn’t make it that day!).

Nurturing More Than Plants
At Bedner’s, Nurturing Growth is more than a tagline. It’s our purpose. We nurture plants, yes—but we also nurture people, relationships, and community.
It’s important to Russ and me to be good stewards of not just the land, but also the people who step onto it—whether they come here to work or to shop. We’ve been blessed to be joined by the right people at the right time, season after season.
And when you enjoy the people you work with, even the busiest days are better.
Thank You for Being Part of Our Story
To everyone who supported us so far this season—thank you. Whether you are picking out perennials, sipping wine in the garden, or planning a landscape project, you help make Bedner’s what it is today.
We hope you’ll join us in thanking our hardworking team—especially in this summer heat! Whether they’re planting at your home, assisting you in the garden center, or pouring your wine on a weekend afternoon, they do it all with heart.
Here’s to growing together.
Warmly,

Bedner’s Farm and Greenhouse
