The September Perennial and Houseplant of the Month
‘Undaunted Ruby’ Muhly Grass and Kalanchoe ‘Chocolate Soldier’
We’re paying a little more well-deserved attention to a select perennial and houseplant each month. And when you download the free Bedner’s app, you’ll save $5ea during the month of September.
Undaunted Ruby
If you’ve seen Undaunted Ruby (Muhlenbergia reverchonii ‘Undaunted’), you’d remember. That’s because this easy-care, clump-forming perennial grass creates a cloud of airy ruby-pink plumes in late summer, just as everything else in your landscape is fading. The spun-sugar pink and reddish tones really shine when everything else is reaching peak fall color, too.
Native to our zone, Undaunted Ruby is hardy, waterwise and pollinator friendly. Yours is compact (up to 2-3’ tall and wide) but fast-growing thriving in full summer sun and hardy through frigid winters. Leaving yours standing through winter creates a swaying amber spectacle, excellent wildlife refuge and attractive winter interest.
Chocolate Soldier
We’re in our fuzzy era with this month’s perennial and houseplant duo, because Kalanchoe tomentosa ‘Chocolate Soldier’ is a beautiful succulent with fuzzy, felt-like leaves and stems.
Yours will stay small, tidy and easy-to-care-for in your container, with loose rosettes and vertical, oval-shaped leaves that blend silvery green with distinctive chocolate brown tips and outlines (some call them stitches). It’s even known to be ‘hard to kill,’ requiring very little water and only when completely dry. Give yours morning sun or partial/filtered light.
Remember, when you download the free Bedner’s Farm & Greenhouse app, you’ll save on a new Perennial and Houseplant every month.
