It’s Not What You Know, but Who You Know
There’s a saying that it’s not what you know, but who you know. Thanks to knowing Erin — one of our former seasonal staff, now busy raising her beautiful toddler — I was introduced to CASA for Kids a few years ago.
CASA for Kids, Inc. is a local nonprofit that trains volunteers to advocate for abused and neglected children in Washington County’s courts. Erin, a CASA volunteer at the time, submitted a donation request for their annual fundraiser. As someone who narrowly escaped a similar situation as a child, I knew right away we needed to support them — and we’ve been proud sponsors ever since.
Attending the walk has become a tradition for me and our daughters, Hope and Ruth. Before the walk, the director shares powerful stories about the children they serve. This year, a CASA volunteer was honored for 22 years of service. She spoke about how she almost didn’t volunteer because she was busy raising her own kids — but once she started, she never looked back. “How do I not have the time?” she said. Every child they serve — over 100 kids — has experienced abuse or neglect.

I’m sharing this story for two reasons: to spread the word about this incredible organization, and to celebrate the power of community.
We’re all in each other’s lives for a reason. I learn so much from the people around me — our team, our customers, our vendors. As much as I love reading and studying, the most valuable lessons often come from relationships. Without Erin, I likely would not have known about CASA for Kids.
One of our core values is Others First — and it reminds me that time spent with others is never wasted. I’m trying to slow down, listen more, and stay open to the opportunities and friendships that come with it.
Speaking of slowing down, our garden center is the perfect place to do that! Stop by soon for some “green therapy”. The greenhouse is full and overflowing, and is restocked multiple times per day all month long. TIP: If you want to check on the availability of perennials, shrubs, trees or bagged soils, visit our website. It’s a great way to see what we have, what’s coming soon (“on-order”), and make a shopping list.

Melanie has been with the family garden center business since 1999, gaining hands-on experience in nearly every aspect–from cashiering and greenhouse production to bookkeeping, perennial buying, marketing, and store management. Now serving as Finance and Marketing Director, she combines her expertise with a passion for growing the business. She and her husband, Russ, have loved seeing how plants, gardening, and beautiful landscapes bring joy to our community.
