Bedner's Farm & Greenhouse

Weekly News, 05.17.22

Hi there,

Who else can’t wait for fresh, homegrown vegetables?
Do you grow your own food at home?

I wasn’t fortunate to grow up with gardening. My dad had a small vegetable garden for a few years, but I never helped him or learned what he was doing. I got to enjoy the harvest though, and so did quite a few of our neighbors. So thankfully I experienced a bit of the benefits of homegrown food, and how it brought some of the community together.

Maybe you grew up in the garden, and have continued on the tradition.  Maybe you are passing on your gardening knowledge to the next generation too. If not, it’s never too late to learn and try! If that’s the case, we are here to help. If you’ve been vegetable gardening and grow the same thing every year, I challenge you to try something new. Try a new variety of tomato, or experiment with succession planting if you never have, to get a longer harvest.

I’m thankful to have learned about farming from my father-in-law, Bob, and my husband Russ. There’s something truly special about preparing the land, planting, and then enjoying delicious meals from the harvest. It’s by no means easy… we deal with weather, pest and disease, and deer browsing challenges. But nothing worth doing is easy, right?

If you don’t have the time or space to grow your own food, we do the work for you. Did you know that beginning in about mid-June, we’ll be harvesting our homegrown tomatoes. Shortly after that comes zucchini, blueberries, peppers, cucumbers, eggplant, green beans, cabbage, and more. Our fresh produce is available in the store everyday once we start picking. We also invite everyone to come and pick-your-own from our fields, every Saturday beginning July 16. Other ways to enjoy fresh food with us is at our weekly Community Market Days, beginning July 2 and our Fields to Fork wine dinners in July and September.

Whether you are growing your own, or enjoying the fresh produce that we grow here in Cecil, thank you for your support! We know that in the busyness of life, sometimes it’s easier to pick up your plants or fresh produce from the local grocery store or box store. We appreciate every one of you that makes the trip to our store, and we will continue to work hard to provide you with the best in quality and customer service.

Looking forward to enjoying the harvest with you soon!
