A few members of our staff and I made a quick trip to the Chicago area recently for a perennial plant event at Ball Seed Company. We enjoyed their gardens, as well as those at a fellow garden center and Cantigny Park. It’s always something when Russ and I get to walk around and admire plants, but when there are four of us plant nerds together there is quite a bit of ‘oohing and aahing.’ So much fun! How about a few notes for the week?

  • The summer crop of annuals is looking gorgeous. If you need some pops of color, we have a fresh selection of Angelonia, dahlias, pentas, vinca, sunpatiens, and more. And each week in July, we’ll be highlighting a couple special 6″ annuals and when you Buy One, Get One Free!

  • Please note Summer Hours are in effect and we’ll be closed on Mondays to stop and smell the roses.

  • Quick reminder that we’ve scaled back our produce department to temporary pop-ups of select crops. The Pick-your-own vegetable field is estimated to open the weekend of July 15, depending on crop conditions.

  • We planted the fall mum crop about two weeks ago now. I was just looking at the list of colors, and there are about 60 different varieties! Each one is selected for either an early, mid or late fall bloom time for beautiful blooming mums from late August through October.

  • We also recently planted more perennials, including anemone, asters, black-eyed susans, blanket flower, coneflowers, helenium, leadwort, salvia, toad lily, and more. They should be ready for purchase early to mid August.

  • We celebrated our well-deserving staff at our annual summer party. This year we had an 80’s theme, so prepare yourselves; ) Working in a garden center and landscape business in spring is not for wimps, and this Team rocked it! Pictured below are some of the hardest working people I know.

I hope that you’ve had plenty of time lately to get outside and enjoy your yard and garden. Happy summer!
