Weekly News, 07.23.24

Maureen, our Retail Manager, was recently commenting about how it’s been an extra great season for hydrangeas in all of the northeast. Plants that bloom on “old wood”, like the Big Leaf (macrophylla) or Mountain (serrata), thrived this year due to a mild winter, plenty of spring rain and no late spring frosts.

How do your hydrangeas look this year? Send me some photos— I’d love to see them!

Below are a few of mine. I have a hedge of five Ruby Slippers oakleaf hydrangea alongside our porch. This is one of my favorite plants! It provides four seasons of interest with bright white blooms in spring that turn a rich ruby color as summer continues. The fall color is a beautiful dark red. Then in winter I love leaving the browned blooms on to enjoy along with the exfoliating bark.

I also have the straight species of hydrangea quercifolia, a grouping of three hydrangea paniculata Quick Fire, and I just planted a new Eclipse hydrangea this past spring.

If you’re looking to learn more about hydrangeas, here is an oldie but goodie hydrangea video that Russ did six years ago, and here is our hydrangea rack card. You can also pick one of these up at your next visit.

Hydrangeas make great cut flowers, both fresh and dried.

If you want a quick and easy plant combination for a cut flower garden, we’ve put together this Yard to Vase planting kit that includes the Bobo hydrangea. The kits include all of the plants that you need plus a design that shows you exactly how to plant.

Our Landscape Designer, Maddison, just showed me a gorgeous design that she did recently for a new home that includes the Incrediball hydrangea. If you know the Annabelle hydrangea, this one is an improvement that has even bigger blooms with stronger stems that won’t flop.  If you are interested in incorporating some hydrangeas into your landscape, or even thinking of an overall landscape refresh, but don’t have the time or interest to DIY, fill out a landscape request form to get on our schedule. And stay tuned for more on this particular project. We’ll be installing it soon and will be sure to snap some photos to share.
