What’s Available Now?
and a few gardening to-dos for April
Thanks to everyone who stopped by so far for our opening week! Yes, it’s still early for most of the annual and vegetable plants growing in the greenhouses, but we have plenty for you to get started with some plant therapy now—
- Plant some seeds! We have a nice selection of herb, vegetable and flower seeds. To learn more about sowing and planting dates, I love this planting calculator tool from Margaret Roach.
- Amend your soil and prep your beds! In case you missed it, here is our handy soil and mulch calculator. Our favorites to add every season before planting are Bumper Crop Soil Builder, (available by the bag), and compost, (various types available by the bag or by the yard).
- Plant early spring container gardens! Get all of the good ideas in our Early Spring Containers blog post.
- Feed your shrubs and trees! Take good care of your existing plants with a spring fertilization. We use and recommend Espoma Organic plant foods, such as Holly-tone and Plant-tone. Simply sprinkle it on the soil around the drip line of the plant. Do this in the spring and fall.
We all get excited to get our hands on our favorite plants this time of year, and just remember that we still have a chance of frost for about the next six weeks. If you do pick up some tender annuals, herbs, or perennials and the night temperatures dip down below 40 degrees, bring those plants inside for the night. That’s why the garden center isn’t filled to the brim yet too. Over the course of April, our team will be consistently filling up the greenhouse as plants become ready. We’re just getting started!
Here are a couple of other quick updates this week—
- when you visit, be sure to check in with your mobile app so that you get your free gifts! After 10 visits, you get a free flower pot mug; 20 visits you get a free Bedner’s t-shirt; and 30 visits you get a free Bedner’s hat, plus a monthly recurring $5 Reward.
- we’re excited to be working on the new Wine Garden area, located in the shrub and tree department. Our goal this month is to complete some fresh plantings, a new patio display, and a unique mural painting by a local artist. While these projects may not be yet completed, we plan to officially open the Wine Garden on Saturday, April 12. Spring hours will be Saturday and Sunday, 11am-4pm.
There are always so many things to tell you, and so little space in one email. Thanks for reading, and for your support. It’s so much fun to be your place for Homegrown Happiness.
